Randomly wandering in cyberspace; I found this Funny Internet Zen Haiku. Unexpectedly, I burst out laughing and instantly realized I was pure E.y.D material.  I decided to do something new and illustrate the quote in a picture for social media purposes. Then the search continued and I found three more proverbs that got the lol go ahead. I hope you enjoy this short illustrated post.

I have always been intrigued by enlightenment, but it seemed so complicated; so unattainable. Then I read The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle and realized it was simple. The Power of Now gave two great examples that enlightened everything.

Simple Enlightenment: Craving Your Favorite dish.

“Pleasure is always derived from something outside you, whereas joy arises from within.”  Eckhart Tolle

I’m a carnivore who loves fillet Mignon, rack of lamb, and grease cheeseburgers. I get irresistible cravings that need satisfying. Visualize for a moment your favorite meal. Imagine the smell tantalizing your senses as all your attention shifts to the simple pleasure of tasting something wonderful. That first mouth watering bite is heaven on earth. Hummm… You say to yourself. Ahhh – Yes I deserve something this great.  And isn’t always the first bite that taste the best? Hummm… Yes. Yes it is, or at least for me, it was.

Then the second bite, third and so on, but before it’s over, something gets lost along the way. The flavors settle in as each bite becomes less and less fulfilling. By then time I finish a cheeseburger, I barely notice the last bite. So what changes? I do. My attention to the present moment shifts. My senses lose focus as life and its messy confusion of thoughts start turning my cerebral wheel of  unrest.

Eckhart Tolle challenges his readers to make every bite; a first bite.  When you give complete  attention to finding joy in one simple thing,  for that brief moment in time, you’re experiencing a moment of enlightenment. A truly simple exercise: one that taste good, feels good and is good.  My food cravings are now satisfied from start to finish.

Simple Enlightenment: Getting stopped at a red light.

The second example from The Power Of Now I wish to share is about red-lights. Take a moment to imagine you’re in a rush; late for a very important meeting. Time is scarce. You feel the pressure mounting, stress building, and you know that no matter what – you’re going to be late. Finally, you’re stopped at a red-light, the world’s longest red-light.  It’s taking forever; you want to scream and pound the dashboard in frustration. You’re trapped in an eternity of red going nowhere. Now, ask yourself one very important question.  Do you have the power to be happy in this moment? Can you choose to be happy? Can you let out all the frustration and let happiness prevail?

We’re the guardians of our thoughts and feelings: we choose how we feel. We can all choose to be happy at any moment.  Happiness is a choice, it may seem impossible at times, but the power is within us at any moment. So next time your rushing, or late, or find yourself stuck behind a red light or road block.  Just ask one question: Do I have the power to be happy in this moment?  I think the answer will surprise you.

I don’t know how to express my love for Shantaram. I fear defining it, or labelling it. There is no value in understanding the reasons why I love this book. Reason and love have no connection in art. The art that captures us, is the art we dare not make reasonable. Great art is made up of emotions and expressions that move us. The truth I realized in the heart of Shantaram, is that we are all, everyone of us, is moving towards or away for God. And with that, a little bit of my soul swept forward into the light.

When more then one friend recommends the same book to me, I consider it an omen. With Shantaram,  I knew after the first two pages it was a brilliant book. Here are three quotes from the first two chapters that I hope will inspire you to read this masterpiece: Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts.

The vacation is over. Perhaps, I needed a little break from my online obsessions. What I missed most while taking a break from Enlighten Your day was the comments and feedback from my readers. So today, I heard this quote that I felt compelled to share with my readers in hopes that you might have something to teach me about the questions I am putting forth, or maybe you just feel the desire to share something about this topic.

Jack Kerouac lived the life he wrote about in his books. He was first, his own hero, living the life he wanted to live, the life of an artist on the road seeking the freedom of leaving everything behind you for what is in front of you. Striving to experience as many unknown present moment joys as possible. Like most of my favourite heroes, he found the light in the darkest hour of the night, he devoured the quick and easy highs in life, but never stops chasing the pure seemingly intangible ones – Enlightenment. I hope you will enjoy this selection of his Kerouac’s most famous quotes and the essentials of his Buddhist inspired literary style of Spontaneous Prose.

The essentials of his Buddhist inspired literary style of Spontaneous Prose.

Kerouac would include ideas he developed in his Buddhist studies. He called this style Spontaneous Prose, a literary technique akin to stream of consciousness.

Among the writings he set down specifically about his Spontaneous Prose method, the most concise would be Belief and Technique for Modern Prose, a list of thirty “essentials”.

1. Scribbled secret notebooks, and wild typewritten pages, for your own joy

2. Submissive to everything, open, listening

3. Try never get drunk outside your own house

4. Be in love with your life

5. Something that you feel will find its own form
