Thanks for contributing a little insight Jim. I agree with you. I love how the book begins and ends in the same place. His personal treasure was right there at the beginning all along.

Peace

I'd have to say that my favorite part of The Alchemist was its implicit depiction of Christian doctrine as objective truth. Toward the end of the book, the alchemist tells Santiago a story of the two brothers, one of which said something that would be forever remembered in the hearts of many. That phrase was "Lord I am not worthy to come under your roof, but only say the word and my servant shall be healed."
I also thought of some interesting hidden meaning behind the book's setting at the beginning and end. It both begins and ends in the sacristy of an old church. A sacristy, where the priest prepares for the Mass, I viewed as analogous to the Eucharist (I am speaking of Catholic doctrine here). It is written in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, that the Eucharist is the "source and summit" of one's faith. Might Coelho have been symbolizing this doctrine in his novel by initiating the plot and ending the story in a sacristy? Not to mention that the treasure, the realization of his Personal Legend, was located here also.

No matter what your situation, you still must follow your dreams. You can't give up. I can't say I've been in a dire a situation as those in Pakistan or suffered through a catastrophe like Katrina or the earthquakes seen in Haiti, but I've been through my own turmoil and dispair. It wasn't until I decided to go after what I wanted and changed my outlook did I see some of my intentions come into reality. We all have that ability, if we choose to perservere and live out our destiny.
